To celebrate the completion of Scooba Public Library’s renovations, please join us for an Open House on Thursday, April 27th at 6:00 p.m. The celebration will include a recognition of our donors and volunteers and their accomplishments. Light refreshments will be served.
This event, free and open to the public, will mark the exciting conclusion of work that began many months ago by a team of volunteers including a professional cataloger from the Huntington Library in California and the East Mississippi Community College (Scooba) chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Community members will be able to see “before” photos of the library project and compare them to the finished interior.
Scooba Branch was the sole library in the system that had not yet been automated. Because all of the library system’s staff hours are required to maintain regular operations, additional help was needed for this special project. Librarian Kate Peck flew in from California and donated three weeks of professional work to catalog the collection (put the catalog into our Integrated Library System, permitting automated computer check outs and online requests.) Lamar County Library Director Phillip Carter and Technical Services Librarian Terry Lajaunie provided additional pro bono assistance with the process.
Donations of books and materials were made by residents of Scooba and Kemper County, EMCC students, local businesses, and individuals. Mayor Alan Beatty and the Scooba Board of Aldermen voted to allow changes to be made to the Town of Scooba’s building to increase available floor space for shelves and furniture. Phi Theta Kappa members organized a Children’s Book Drive to collect new, updated reading material for the community’s young people. The honor society chapter also donated paint, carpet, equipment, hardware, and signage and many hours of hard work to repaint the library and completely rearrange the space. Liberty Fuels Company, LLC made a cash gift which was used to create a bright, comfortable, and welcoming space for children.
We look forward to seeing many members of the community of the Town of Scooba and Kemper County at the Scooba Library Open House on April 27th. For directions to the library or for further information about the event, call or email the library office.
